On purpose. Notch is for places you have actually stood, so the map reaches about five miles around you. That's enough slack for a wandering GPS, or for notching the café you just left. For maps of anywhere at all, use Laser Map Studio.

Check that location is allowed: Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Notch → While Using the App. The map also needs a data connection to load. Once a tile is made, it's stored on your phone.

Anything from a few streets to a mile across fits the same four-inch hexagon. Small frames show individual buildings. Large ones show the shape of a neighbourhood. The scale note under the size control warns you when houses get finer than the laser's kerf and will burn together.

Yes. Notch names the tile after the place it finds there, and you can edit the label before you save the file.

Any laser engraver whose software opens SVG. The layer colours are xTool Creative Space's presets, so in XCS each operation lands on its own layer. In other software (LightBurn, for example), assign each colour an operation yourself.

Engrave green (parks), orange (major roads) and black (buildings and the name). Score purple (side streets and trails). Cut blue (water) and red (the hexagon outline). The file's layers are already in the order the machine should run them, with the outline last, so the piece doesn't shift while anything else is still being cut.

That depends on your machine and material, so Notch doesn't guess. Run a material test on a scrap of the same sheet first, and set speed and power per colour in your laser software.

On desktop, save the SVG as a file and open it in XCS rather than copying and pasting it.

Print the tray's first three layers in blue and change filament to black at layer four. Only the floor shows through the water cut-outs, so one filament change does it.

Plywood and printers vary. Print a single test tray first, and adjust the fit setting on the listing: tighter if the tile rattles, looser if it won't go in.

No. Everything works signed out. Signing in with Apple only backs up your collection so it follows you to your next phone.

Open your Collection, find the Signed in section, tap Delete account and confirm. Your files and records are deleted from our servers. Your tiles stay on the phone. See the Privacy Policy for details.

Your first ten notches are free. After that, a small one-time pack covers the map data and hosting. There's no subscription and no ads. Purchases go through Apple, so refunds are handled by Apple at reportaproblem.apple.com.
